Well, it's not really the English language being funny here, but Latin. Both words derive from Latin, and were adopted into English in the Renaissance. "Vindicate" comes from the Latin vindicātus, meaning to "lay claim to", a Roman law term of laying claim to someone as 'free,', the root being vindic-; "Vindictive" comes from the Latin vindicta, meaning vengeance, the root being vindict-. Umm, so anyway... I'm a nerd, I know.
